Ripe Village Stores is in the centre of Ripe, between Lewes and Hailsham in East Sussex.

The shop has a small post office, and alongside the staples, they stock lots of homemade food (Lesley can recommend their pasties!) and have a well-stocked deli department.

Fresh bread is delivered every day, and they also sell fresh meat and fish.

Their café is very popular with walkers and cyclists – they are known far and wide for their delicious homemade cakes.

They are open:

Mon-Fri – 9:00am – 5:00pm

Saturday – Morning Only

Sunday – Closed

Old Recipe Corner

There are so many unusual recipes and ingredients in Lesley’s collection of old cookery books and manuscripts, but today we have a simple recipe for parsnips:

To Stew Parsnips

Boil them tender, scrape them from the dust and cut them into pieces.

Next, put them into a saucepan with enough cream for a sauce, along with a piece of butter rolled in flour and a little salt.

Don’t forget to shake the sauté pan often!

When the cream boils, pour them into a plate for a corner dish, or a side dish at supper.
